The NDML team enjoyed attending the Halloween Haunt event last week. The industry gathering was hosted by NTIA at G.A.Y Manchester. It gave late night leisure professionals the chance to network and discuss key issues affecting the industry.
Sacha Lord, Night-time Advisor for Greater Manchester, took part in a Q&A discussion around the night time economy and Greater Manchester’s commitment to inclusion. There was also guest talks from Paul Martin OBE (Chief Executive of the LGBT Foundation) and Michael Kill (CEO of Night Time Industry). These talks focussed on challenges within the industry.
Ongoing issues within the night-time leisure industry
Business owners within the iconic Gay Village discussed ongoing issues. Many reported feeling unsupported by the Council, whether through lack of investment or by denying extended licensing hours. Everyone in the industry is respectful of residential areas. But it is an acknowledged problem that prioritising new residential developments over business needs is having a significant impact on the industry.
Each individual business owner has a part to play in the future of the industry. Speaking as one voice is the best way to ensure the industry is heard. One way to do this is through the Night Time Industries Association. The organisation speaks on behalf of its members to local and national government on the issues that matter most. They run events such as Halloween Haunt to allow members to speak out about their problems. They can then work to improve external attitudes towards the industry.
